Second, follow the drainage sequence in one direction: papilla → minor calyx → major calyx → renal pelvis → ureter. Urine formed in the nephrons drips from each pyramid's papilla into a minor calyx, several minor calyces feed a major calyx, the major calyces empty into the renal pelvis, and the pelvis funnels into the ureter. If you can recite that chain, you can label the entire collecting system correctly every time.

The bigger picture: structure follows function

Understanding why the parts sit where they do makes the labels stick. Blood enters through the renal artery at the hilum, branches into ever-smaller vessels that reach the nephrons in the cortex, where filtration begins.
