How Do You Correctly Label the Components of the Kidney?

The answer: labeling from outer surface to inner drainage
When labeling a kidney cross-section, work from the outside inward and then follow the path urine takes. Doing it in that order keeps the structures in logical relation to one another instead of memorizing them as a random list.

Why the common mix-ups happen
The most frequent labeling error is swapping the cortex and medulla. Remember: cortex shares a root with "cortical" and "exterior" - it is always the outer shell. The medulla (Latin for "marrow," i.e., the middle) is deep and striped because it is packed with the parallel loops of Henle and collecting ducts.
A second frequent error is confusing the renal pelvis with the whole "kidney basin" or with the calyces. The calyces are the individual cups and channels; the pelvis is the single large collecting funnel they all drain into. Urine never collects in the cortex or medulla as a pool - it is continuously produced in the nephrons, then routed: papilla to minor calyx to major calyx to pelvis to ureter.
Students also mislabel the renal columns as part of the medulla. Columns are actually cortical tissue (same origin as the outer cortex) that extends inward between the pyramids, so they should be shaded the same as the cortex, not the medulla.
The bigger picture: structure follows function
Each labeled region maps onto a job. Filtration begins in the cortex, where glomeruli sit; concentration of urine happens in the medullary pyramids via the countercurrent loops of Henle; and collection and transport happen in the calyces, pelvis, and ureter. Blood supply enters and leaves through the hilum, which is why the artery, vein, and ureter are always drawn clustered at the medial indentation. Understanding this outer-to-inner, filter-then-drain logic means you can reconstruct the labels even on an unfamiliar diagram rather than relying on rote position.
