Students frequently reverse the arachnoid and pia because both are thin. Remember that the pia is the one that is inseparable from the brain surface, while the arachnoid bridges over the sulci. Another error is placing CSF in the subdural space — CSF lives in the subarachnoid space. Finally, do not confuse the meninges of the brain with the same three layers continuing down the spinal cord, where an additional epidural space filled with fat and veins is a normal, real (not just potential) space used for epidural anesthesia.
