How do you label the bony structures of the shoulder and upper limb?

Shoulder (pectoral) girdle — two bones anchor the limb to the axial skeleton:

  • Clavicle (collarbone): an S-shaped strut connecting the sternum to the scapula.
  • Scapula (shoulder blade): a flat, triangular bone bearing three named landmarks — the acromion (the bony tip of the shoulder), the coracoid process (a hook-like anterior projection), and the glenoid cavity (the shallow socket that receives the humeral head).

Arm (brachium) — one bone:

  • Humerus: landmarks include the rounded head, the greater and lesser tubercles, the deltoid tuberosity, and, at the elbow, the trochlea and capitulum.

Forearm (antebrachium) — two bones:

  • Radius: the lateral bone, on the thumb side.
  • Ulna: the medial bone, with the olecranon forming the point of the elbow.

Hand (manus) — three groups:

  • Carpals: 8 wrist bones in two rows.

Landmarks that are easy to confuse

Students most often mislabel the scapular processes. The acromion points backward and laterally to cap the shoulder joint, while the coracoid process hooks forward under the clavicle — remember "coracoid = curved, comes forward." The glenoid cavity is the socket; the humeral head is the ball that sits in it, forming the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint. In the forearm, keep radius and ulna straight with the mnemonic that the radius rotates and sits on the same side as your thumb in anatomical position, so during pronation the radius crosses over the ulna.

Why common wrong labels fail

A frequent error is calling the ulna the thumb-side bone — it is not; the radius is lateral (thumb side). Another is counting 7 carpals or 9; the correct number is 8. Labeling the elbow point as part of the humerus is also wrong: that prominence is the olecranon of the ulna, not the humerus. Finally, do not confuse the coracoid process of the scapula with the coronoid process of the ulna — similar names, different bones.

The bigger picture

These bones form a continuous kinetic chain. The clavicle and scapula give the shoulder its huge range of motion (the shallow glenoid trades stability for mobility), the humerus transmits force to the forearm, and the radius/ulna/carpal arrangement lets the hand rotate and grip. Understanding why each landmark exists — as an attachment for muscles like the deltoid or a joint surface — makes the labels stick far better than rote memorization.
